Introduction
Linking words are essential for cohesive writing. They connect ideas and show relationships between sentences and paragraphs.
Addition
Words to add information: moreover, furthermore, in addition, besides, also, as well as, not only…but also. Example: The government must invest in education. Moreover, it should improve healthcare services.
Contrast and Concession
Contrast: but, however, whereas, while, on the other hand, in contrast. Concession: although, even though, despite, in spite of, nevertheless, nonetheless. Examples: Although the weather was bad, they continued the journey. He is rich; nevertheless, he is not happy.
Exercises
- Complete: The film was boring, ____ we stayed until the end.
- Rewrite using although: It rained. We went to the beach.
