Reported Speech: Statements and Questions
Reported speech (indirect speech) is used to report what someone said without quoting them directly.
1. Tense Changes
- Present Simple → Past Simple: “I like coffee” → He said he liked coffee.
- Present Continuous → Past Continuous: “I am studying” → She said she was studying.
- Present Perfect → Past Perfect: “I have seen it” → He said he had seen it.
- Past Simple → Past Perfect: “I went” → He said he had gone.
- Will → Would: “I will come” → He said he would come.
2. Other Changes
Now → then, here → there, today → that day, tomorrow → the next day, yesterday → the day before, this → that.
3. Reported Questions
Wh-questions: He asked + wh-word + subject + verb. “Where do you live?” → He asked where I lived.
Yes/No questions: He asked + if/whether + subject + verb. “Do you like tea?” → He asked if I liked tea.
4. Exercises
- “I am tired,” she said → She said _____ tired.
- “Will you come?” he asked → He asked if _____ .
