Inversion after Negative Adverbials

Inversion reverses subject and verb after negative adverbials at the start of a sentence. Used for emphasis in formal English.

Common Adverbials

• Never, rarely, seldom, hardly ever
• Not only… but also…
• No sooner… than…
• Hardly… when…
• Under no circumstances

Structure

[Negative adverbial] + auxiliary + subject + main verb

Examples

• Normal: I have never seen such beauty. → Never have I seen such beauty.
• Normal: She rarely eats meat. → Rarely does she eat meat.
• Normal: No sooner arrived than the phone rang. → No sooner had I arrived than the phone rang.

Exercises

1. Rewrite: “I have never been so happy.” → “Never…”
2. Rewrite: “She hardly ever complains.” → “Hardly ever…”
3. Write 2 inverted sentences with “Not only” and “No sooner”.
