Countable and Uncountable Nouns: Advanced Rules

Nouns in English are either countable or uncountable. This lesson covers advanced rules and tricky cases.

Countable Nouns

Can be counted. Have singular and plural forms. Example: one apple, two apples.

Uncountable Nouns

Cannot be counted individually. Have only one form. Example: water, rice, milk, bread, information, news, furniture, money, advice, homework.

Quantifiers

Countable	Uncountable
many, a few, few, several	much, a little, little
a/an/one/two	some, any, a lot of

Tricky Cases

• News is uncountable: “The news is good.”
• Furniture is uncountable: “The furniture is new.”
• Advice is uncountable: “Can you give me some advice?”
• Some nouns can be both: “I had chicken for dinner.” (unc) vs “The farmer has chickens.” (c)
