Adverbs of Manner: How to Form and Use Them
Adverbs of manner describe how an action is performed. They usually come after the main verb or after the object. They are formed by adding “-ly” to adjectives, with some special rules.
Formation
- Adjective + -ly: quick → quickly, careful → carefully, quiet → quietly, bad → badly.
- Adjectives ending in -y: change y to i + ly: easy → easily, happy → happily, lucky → luckily.
- Adjectives ending in -le: change e to y: gentle → gently, simple → simply, terrible → terribly.
- Adjectives ending in -ic: add -ally: basic → basically, automatic → automatically.
- Irregular forms: good → well, fast → fast, hard → hard, early → early, late → late.
Position in Sentences
- After the verb: She speaks English well. / He drives carefully.
- Before the verb (with adverbs of frequency/degree): She quickly finished her homework.
- At the beginning or end (for emphasis): Luckily, we arrived on time.
Adjective vs Adverb
Adjective (describes a noun): She is a careful driver. (careful describes driver)
Adverb (describes a verb): She drives carefully. (carefully describes drives)
