Relative Clauses: Defining and Non-Defining
Relative clauses add information about a noun. They are essential for complex sentences in the Baccalaureate exam.
Defining Relative Clauses
Provide essential information needed to identify the noun. No commas.
Who (people): The man who lives next door is a doctor.
Which (things): The book which I read was interesting.
That (people/things): The car that I bought is new.
Whose (possession): The girl whose father is a teacher is my friend.
Where (place): The school where I study is big.
When (time): The day when we met was sunny.
Non-Defining Relative Clauses
Provide extra information, not essential. Use commas. Cannot use ‘that’.
My father, who is a teacher, speaks three languages.
Paris, which is the capital of France, is beautiful.
The Eiffel Tower, which was built in 1889, is a famous landmark.
