The Passive Voice: Formation and Uses
The passive voice is an essential grammatical structure in English, especially important for academic writing and the BAC exam. In the passive voice, the subject receives the action rather than performs it.
Formation of the Passive Voice
The passive voice is formed with: Subject + be (conjugated) + past participle + (by + agent). The tense of “be” matches the tense of the active verb. Present simple: am/is/are + pp (English is spoken). Past simple: was/were + pp (The book was written). Present perfect: have/has been + pp (The work has been finished). Future: will be + pp (The project will be completed). Modal verbs: can be, must be, should be + pp (The work must be done).
When to Use the Passive Voice
The passive voice is used when: The agent is unknown (“My car was stolen”), The agent is obvious or unimportant (“The murderer was arrested”), We want to emphasise the action or the receiver (“The president was elected”), Formal or scientific writing (“The experiment was conducted”), Reporting news (“Three people were injured in the accident”).
Converting Active to Passive
Steps: 1. The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive. 2. Change the verb to be + past participle (same tense). 3. The subject of the active sentence becomes the agent introduced by “by”. Example: “Shakespeare wrote Hamlet” → “Hamlet was written by Shakespeare.” “The chef is cooking dinner” → “Dinner is being cooked by the chef.”
Examples
- Present simple: “Coffee is grown in Brazil.”
- Past simple: “The Pyramids were built by the ancient Egyptians.”
- Present perfect: “The homework has been finished.”
- Future: “The new school will be opened next year.”
Exercises
- Transform to passive: “Someone stole my wallet.” “The students will organize the event.”
- Decide if passive is appropriate: “The window … (break) by a ball.” “Shakespeare … (write) many plays.”
