Quantifiers: Some, Any, Much, Many, A lot of

Quantifiers are words that express the quantity of something. They are used before nouns.

Some and Any

• Some: affirmative sentences: “I have some friends.”
• Any: negative and questions: “Do you have any money?”
• Special uses: offers and requests use “some”: “Would you like some tea?”

Much and Many

• Much: uncountable nouns: “How much water?”
• Many: countable nouns: “How many books?”

A lot of / Lots of

Used with both countable and uncountable nouns: “A lot of people, a lot of water.”

Exercises

1. Complete: “There isn’t ___ milk left.” (some/any).
2. Choose: “How ___ (much/many) students are there?”
3. Fill: “She has ___ (a lot of/much) patience.”
