Present Perfect vs Past Simple: Key Differences

The present perfect and past simple both talk about the past, but they have different focuses.

Present Perfect

• Form: have/has + past participle.
• Uses: experiences, recent events, result in the present.
• Time expressions: ever, never, already, yet, just, since, for.
• Example: “I have visited London.”

Past Simple

• Form: verb + -ed or irregular form.
• Uses: completed actions at a specific time.
• Time expressions: yesterday, last week, in 2020, ago.
• Example: “I visited London last year.”

Key Distinction

Present perfect focuses on the experience/result; past simple focuses on when it happened.
