Countable and Uncountable Nouns

Nouns in English are either countable (can be counted) or uncountable (cannot be counted). This distinction affects article usage, quantifiers, and verb agreement.

Countable Nouns

Have singular and plural forms: a book → two books, an apple → apples. Use with numbers (one chair, three chairs). Use with a/an (a cat, an elephant). Use with many/few: many books, few students.

Uncountable Nouns

Have only one form (usually singular): water, rice, information, advice, furniture. Cannot use with a/an or numbers. Use with much/little: much water, little time. Use with some/any: some milk, any sugar. Use “a piece of” or “a glass of”: a piece of information, a glass of water.

Common Uncountable Nouns

Food and drink: bread, milk, cheese, meat, water. Materials: wood, gold, silver, glass. Abstract: love, happiness, knowledge, freedom, time. School subjects: mathematics, physics, history.

2. Fill: (… information is useful – … many chairs in the room – I need … advice).
3. Correct the mistakes: (He gave me an advice – I need a milk – There are much students).
