Regular and Defective Verbs in Arabic
Arabic verbs are classified based on the presence of weak letters into different types.
Regular Verb
A verb with no weak letters hamza or doubled letters in its root. Examples: wrote studied opened.
Defective Verb
A verb whose final root letter is a weak letter waw or ya. Examples: called walked threw.
Conjugation Differences
Defective verbs drop their final weak letter in certain conjugations especially in the jussive case. Example: to call: he calls they call.
