Conditionals: Types 1, 2, and 3
Conditional sentences express conditions and their results. This lesson covers the three main types for 1st and 2nd Year Secondary literary stream students (شعبة آداب).
Type 1: Real Present/Future
Structure: If + present simple, will + infinitive
Use: Possible condition and likely result.
- If it rains, I will take an umbrella.
- If you study, you will pass the exam.
- If she comes, we will be happy.
Type 2: Unreal Present
Structure: If + past simple, would + infinitive
Use: Hypothetical or unlikely situation.
- If I had money, I would travel the world.
- If he were here, he would help us.
- If we lived in Paris, we would visit the museums.
Type 3: Unreal Past
Structure: If + past perfect, would have + past participle
Use: Impossible condition about the past (regret).
- If I had studied, I would have passed the exam.
- If she had left earlier, she would have caught the train.
- If they had invited me, I would have gone.
