Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology

Phonetics and Phonology are fundamental branches of Linguistics. Phonetics studies the physical sounds of human speech – how they are produced (articulatory), transmitted (acoustic), and perceived (auditory). Phonology studies how sounds function within a particular language system, including sound patterns and rules.

The International Phonetic Alphabet IPA

The IPA is a standardized system of symbols representing each distinct sound phone in human language. It enables linguists to transcribe speech sounds from any language accurately.

English Consonants

English has 24 consonant phonemes. Examples include p voiceless bilabial plosive, b voiced bilabial plosive, th voiceless dental fricative, dh voiced dental fricative, sh voiceless palato-alveolar fricative, and ng velar nasal.

English Vowels

English has approximately 20 vowel sounds. Short vowels: i as in bit, e as in bet, ae as in cat. Long vowels: i: as in beat, u: as in boot. Diphthongs include ai as in bite, ei as in bait, oi as in boy, au as in bout.
