Collocations are words that naturally go together in English. Learning collocations helps you sound more natural and fluent in speaking and writing. Essential for BAC success.
What are Collocations?
Collocations are combinations of words that frequently appear together. Native speakers use them automatically. Example: “make a decision” (not “do a decision”), “heavy rain” (not “strong rain”).
Types of Collocations:
- Adjective + Noun: heavy traffic, strong coffee, bright future, key factor, major issue, golden opportunity.
- Verb + Noun: make a decision, take action, have an impact, give a speech, do business, catch a cold, break a habit.
- Noun + Verb: time passes, economy grows, bell rings, alarm goes off, temperature rises.
- Adverb + Adjective: highly successful, deeply concerned, strongly opposed, closely related, utterly ridiculous.
- Verb + Preposition: depend on, believe in, apply for, wait for, belong to, consist of, result in.
- Noun + Noun: business partner, family member, television set, science fiction, history book.
Common Collocations for BAC Writing:
