Cause and Effect: So, Such, Too, Enough – BAC Literary Stream
Cause and effect structures are important for expressing reasons and results in English. They are frequently tested in the BAC exam.
1. So and Such
So + adjective/adverb: The test was so difficult that nobody passed.
Such + (a/an) + (adjective) + noun: It was such a difficult test that nobody passed.
Structure: so/such … that … (expresses result)
2. Too
Too + adjective/adverb + to-infinitive: Expresses excess (negative meaning).
Example: The box is too heavy to carry. (I cannot carry it.)
He is too young to drive a car.
3. Enough
Adjective/Adverb + enough + to-infinitive: Expresses sufficiency.
Example: He is tall enough to reach the shelf.
She is old enough to drive.
Enough + noun + to-infinitive: We have enough money to buy a car.
4. Comparison: Too vs Enough
Too = more than necessary (negative). Enough = as much as necessary (positive/neutral).
He is too short to play basketball. (negative)
He is tall enough to play basketball. (positive)
5. BAC Examples
Example 1 (BAC 2022): Combine: The film was interesting. Everyone watched it. (so…that) Answer: The film was so interesting that everyone watched it.
Example 2 (BAC 2021): Rewrite: The bag is too heavy. I cannot carry it. (too…to) Answer: The bag is too heavy to carry.
Example 3 (BAC 2020): Complete: He is not strong ____ to lift the box. (enough)
