The Passive Voice: Formation and Uses in All Tenses
The passive voice is used when the action is more important than the doer, or when the doer is unknown. It is formed with the verb “be” + past participle.
Passive Formation by Tense:
- Present simple: am/is/are + past participle. Ex: “English is spoken worldwide.”
- Past simple: was/were + past participle. Ex: “The letter was sent yesterday.”
- Future simple: will be + past participle. Ex: “The results will be announced soon.”
- Present perfect: has/have been + past participle. Ex: “The project has been completed.”
- Past perfect: had been + past participle. Ex: “The work had been finished.”
- Modal verbs: modal + be + past participle. Ex: “This must be done carefully.”
When to use the passive:
- When the agent is unknown: “My car was stolen.”
- When the agent is obvious: “The criminals were arrested.”
- In formal/scientific writing: “The experiment was conducted.”
- To emphasise the receiver of the action: “The president was elected.”
BAC Example 2021:
“The new hospital will be opened by the minister next month.” – Passive voice with future simple and agent.
BAC Example 2023:
“Education should be given priority in the national budget.” – Passive with modal verb “should”.
