Subject-Verb Agreement: Rules and Exceptions
Basic rule:
Singular subject → singular verb. Plural subject → plural verb.
Ex: “The student studies.” / “The students study.”
Special cases:
- Each/every + singular noun → singular verb: “Every student is present.”
- Either/neither + of + plural noun → singular verb: “Either of the answers is correct.”
- Neither…nor → verb agrees with nearest subject: “Neither the teacher nor the students are coming.”
- Collective nouns (team, family, audience) → singular if considered as one unit: “The team is winning.”
