Past Perfect Simple: Formation and Use
The Past Perfect Simple is used to talk about an action that happened before another past action.
Formation
Subject + had + past participle
Affirmative: “I had finished my homework before dinner.”
Negative: “She had not (hadn t) eaten breakfast.”
Question: “Had you seen that film before?”
Uses
- To show an action completed before another past action: “When we arrived, the train had already left.”
- With time expressions like: already, just, never, ever, by the time, before, after.
- In reported speech: “He said he had visited Paris.”
Examples
“By the time I got to school, the class had started.”
“She had never seen the ocean before her trip to Algiers.”
