Linking Words: Addition, Contrast, Cause, Result, Sequence
Linking words (also called connectors or transition words) are essential for writing coherent paragraphs and essays in the BAC exam.
Addition:
Moreover, furthermore, in addition, besides, also, as well as, not only… but also. Exemple: “Studying abroad is expensive. Moreover, it requires a lot of preparation.”
Contrast / Opposition:
However, nevertheless, on the other hand, although, even though, whereas, while, in contrast, yet. Exemple: “Although the government has invested in education, the results are still unsatisfactory.”
Cause and reason:
Because, since, as, due to, owing to, because of, the reason for. Exemple: “Many students fail because they don’t manage their time well.”
Result and consequence:
Therefore, consequently, as a result, thus, hence, so, for this reason. Exemple: “He didn’t study hard. Consequently, he failed the exam.”
Sequence and order:
First/firstly, second/secondly, then, next, after that, finally, eventually, in the first place. Exemple: “First, you need to understand the topic. Then, you can start writing.”
Illustration:
For example, for instance, such as, like, particularly, especially. Exemple: “Several Algerian writers, such as Kateb Yacine and Mouloud Feraoun, are internationally recognized.”
BAC Example 2022:
“Write a paragraph discussing the advantages and disadvantages of social media. Use at least five linking words.” – Common BAC task.
