Expressing Wishes and Regrets: I wish, If only
Expressing wishes and regrets is an important function in English. The structures with “I wish” and “If only” are frequently tested in the BAC exam.
Wish about the present (unreal present):
I wish / If only + past simple. Expresses a desire for a present situation to be different. Exemple: “I wish I had more time.” (but I don’t) / “If only I knew the answer.” (but I don’t)
“I wish I were” (not “was”) is the correct form in formal English. Exemple: “I wish I were rich.”
Wish about the past (regret):
I wish / If only + past perfect. Expresses regret about a past situation. Exemple: “I wish I had studied harder for the exam.” (but I didn’t) / “If only I had listened to my parents.” (but I didn’t)
Wish about the future:
I wish / If only + would + base verb. Expresses a desire for someone to change or for something to happen. Exemple: “I wish you would stop smoking.” / “If only it would stop raining.”
Other expressions for wishes:
- “I’d rather + past simple” (preference about the present): “I’d rather you didn’t smoke.”
- “I’d rather + past perfect” (preference about the past): “I’d rather you hadn’t said that.”
- “It’s time + past simple” (it’s time for something to happen): “It’s time we left.”
- “I’d better + base verb” (I should): “I’d better go now.”
BAC Example 2022:
“Rewrite using ‘I wish’: ‘I don’t have a car.’ → ‘I wish I had a car.'”
