Comparative and Superlative Adjectives
Comparative and superlative forms are used to compare people, things, and ideas. They are frequently tested in BAC exams.
Comparative adjectives:
Used to compare two items. Formation:
- Short adjectives (1-2 syllables): adjective + -er + than. Ex: “Algiers is bigger than Oran.” / “This book is cheaper than that one.”
- Long adjectives (2+ syllables): more + adjective + than. Ex: “This exam is more difficult than the previous one.”
- Irregular: good → better than, bad → worse than, far → farther/further than.
- Equality: as + adjective + as. Ex: “He is as tall as his brother.”
- Inferiority: less + adjective + than. Ex: “This car is less expensive than that one.”
Superlative adjectives:
Used to compare one item with a group. Formation:
- Short adjectives: the + adjective + -est. Ex: “This is the tallest building in the city.”
- Long adjectives: the most + adjective. Ex: “She is the most intelligent student.”
- Irregular: good → the best, bad → the worst, far → the furthest/farthest.
- Inferiority: the least + adjective. Ex: “This is the least expensive option.”
Special cases:
- Two-syllable adjectives ending in -y: change y to i + -er/-est. Ex: happy → happier → the happiest.
- One-syllable adjectives ending in vowel+consonant: double the consonant. Ex: big → bigger → the biggest.
BAC Example 2023:
“Complete: ‘This is (interesting) ______ book I have ever read.’ → ‘the most interesting'”
