There is/There are: Existence, Quantity, and Location

There is/there are expresses existence. There is + singular/uncountable (There is a book on the table, There is some milk in the fridge). There are + plural (There are two cats in the garden). Negative: There isn’t / There aren’t (There isn’t any sugar, There aren’t any students). Questions: Is there? / Are there? (Is there a bank near here? Are there any shops?). With quantity words: There are many students, There is a lot of water. Contractions: there’s, there isn’t, there aren’t. Important for describing rooms, cities, and landscapes.
