Past Continuous: Formation and Uses with When/While
Past continuous describes actions in progress at a specific past time. Formation: was/were + verb-ing. I was reading at 8 pm yesterday. Uses: interrupted action (I was sleeping when the phone rang), two parallel actions (She was cooking while he was watching TV), background description (The sun was shining and the birds were singing). Time clauses: ‘when’ + past simple (interrupting action), ‘while’ + past continuous (longer action). Signal words: at that moment, at 8 pm yesterday, all day yesterday.
