Expressing purpose in English. Infinitive of purpose: to + verb (I went to the shop to buy milk). In order to (formal): She studied hard in order to pass the exam. So as to: He left early so as not to miss the bus. So that + clause (different subject): I gave her the key so that she could enter. For + noun: I went for a walk. For + -ing (purpose of something): This knife is for cutting bread. Questions: What did you do that for? Why did you go there?
