Modal Verbs – Can, Must, Should, Have to
Modal verbs express ability, permission, obligation, advice, and necessity.
Can – Ability/Permission:
I can swim. / Can I go out? / I cannot speak Chinese.
Must – Strong obligation:
You must wear a seatbelt. / You must not smoke here.
Should – Advice:
You should see a doctor. / You should not eat too much sugar.
Have to – Necessity:
I have to finish my homework. / You do not have to come.
