What is a Phrasal Verb?
A phrasal verb is a verb combined with a preposition or an adverb (particle) that changes its meaning. For example: get up (استيقظ), look after (يعتني بـ), put on (يرتدي).
Common Phrasal Verbs
GET:
– get up = stand up / wake up (يستيقظ/يقف): I get up at 6 am.
– get along with = have a good relationship (ينسجم مع): He gets along with his classmates.
– get over = recover from (يتعافى من): She got over her illness.
– get through = pass / survive (يجتاز/ينجح): We got through the exam.
TAKE:
– take off = remove / depart (يخلع/يقلع): The plane took off at noon.
– take care of = look after (يعتني بـ): She takes care of her siblings.
– take part in = participate (يشارك في): They took part in the competition.
– take after = resemble (يشبه): He takes after his father.
LOOK:
– look for = search (يبحث عن): I am looking for my keys.
– look after = take care (يعتني بـ): She looks after her grandmother.
– look forward to = anticipate eagerly (يتطلع إلى): We look forward to the holidays.
– look up = search for information (يبحث عن معلومات): Look up the word in a dictionary.
PUT:
– put on = wear (يرتدي): She put on her coat.
– put off = postpone (يؤجل): Do not put off your homework.
– put out = extinguish (يطفئ): Firefighters put out the fire.
– put up with = tolerate (يتحمل): I cannot put up with this noise.
GO:
– go on = continue (يستمر): The show goes on.
– go out = leave / stop burning (يخرج/ينطفئ): The lights went out.
– go through = experience (يمر بـ): They went through a difficult time.
– go with = match (يناسب/يتناسب مع): This shirt goes with your trousers.
Separable vs Inseparable
Separable: The object can go between the verb and the particle.
Put on your coat. / Put your coat on. ✓
Inseparable: The object must go after the particle.
Look after your brother. (NOT: Look your brother after) ✗
BAC-Style Exercises
Exercise 1: Fill in the blanks with the correct phrasal verb:

b- I __________ my little sister when my parents are away. (look after)
c- The meeting was __________ until next week. (put off)
d- He needs to __________ his fear of public speaking. (get over)
Exercise 2: Replace the underlined words with a suitable phrasal verb:
a- I search for my glasses every morning. → I look for my glasses every morning.
b- She resembles her mother. → She takes after her mother.
c- We participate in many school activities. → We take part in many school activities.
Exercise 3 (BAC): Complete the following paragraph:
“Every morning, I __________ (get up) at 6 am. I __________ (put on) my uniform and __________ (go out) to school. I __________ (get along with) all my classmates.”
