Articles: A, An, The
Articles are small but important words in English. They come before nouns and give information about them. There are two types: indefinite articles (A / An) and the definite article (The).
1. Indefinite Article: A / An
We use A and An before singular countable nouns when we talk about something for the first time or when it is not specific.
| Article | Usage | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| A | Before words starting with a consonant sound | a book, a car, a university, a house |
| An | Before words starting with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u) | an apple, an egg, an hour, an umbrella |
Important Notes
- We use a before words that begin with a consonant SOUND, even if the first letter is a vowel: a university, a European country, a one-way street.
- We use an before words that begin with a vowel SOUND, even if the first letter is a consonant: an hour, an honest man.
- We do NOT use a/an with plural or uncountable nouns: water | a water (wrong), books | a books (wrong)
2. Definite Article: The
We use The when we talk about something specific, unique, or already mentioned.
| Usage | Examples |
|---|---|
| When something is already mentioned | I saw a cat. The cat was black. |
| When there is only one (unique) | The sun, the moon, the Earth |
| Before superlatives | She is the best student in class. |
| Before ordinal numbers | The first lesson, the second chapter |
| With geographical names (rivers, seas, mountain ranges) | The Nile, the Mediterranean, the Alps |
3. Zero Article (No Article)
We do NOT use an article in these cases:
- Plural and uncountable nouns used in general: Dogs are loyal animals. | Water is essential for life.
- Proper nouns (names of people, countries, cities): Ahmed, Algeria, Paris
- Meals, sports, and languages: I have breakfast at 7. | He plays football. | She speaks Arabic.
