1. Zero Conditional (General Truths)

The Zero Conditional is used for facts, general truths, and habits. It describes situations that are always true.

Structure: If + Present Simple, Present Simple

Examples:

  • If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.
  • If it rains, the grass gets wet.
  • If I feel tired, I drink coffee.

2. First Conditional (Real Future Possibilities)

The First Conditional is used for possible future situations and their likely results.

Structure: If + Present Simple, will + base verb

Examples:

  • If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
  • If it rains tomorrow, I will stay at home.
  • If she calls me, I will tell her the news.

Key Differences

Zero Conditional First Conditional

Example If you freeze water, it turns into ice. If you study, you will succeed.

BAC-Style Exercises

Exercise 1: Complete the sentences

Exercise 2: Choose the correct form

  1. If you heat ice, it (will melt / melts).
  2. If we hurry, we (catch / will catch) the bus.
  3. If I don’t eat breakfast, I (am / will be) hungry later.
  4. If you touch fire, you (burn / will burn) yourself.

Answers:

  1. melts (Zero Conditional – general truth)
  2. will catch (First Conditional – future possibility)
  3. will be (First Conditional)
  4. burn (Zero Conditional – general truth)
