I. Yes/No Questions
Questions that expect a yes/no answer are formed by inverting the subject and the auxiliary verb.
With the verb “to be”:
- She is a teacher. → Is she a teacher?
- They are happy. → Are they happy?
With auxiliary verbs (do, does, did, have, can, will…):
- You like coffee. → Do you like coffee?
- He speaks Arabic. → Does he speak Arabic?
- They went to school. → Did they go to school?
Rule: Auxiliary + Subject + Main verb + ?
II. Wh-Questions
Wh-questions begin with a question word (What, Where, When, Why, Who, Whose, Which, How) and seek specific information.

Word order: Question Word + Auxiliary + Subject + Main verb + ?

Exercise 1: Make Yes/No questions from these statements.
a) She lives in Oran. → Does she live in Oran?
b) They have finished their homework. → Have they finished their homework?
c) You can swim. → Can you swim?
Exercise 2: Ask a Wh-question for the underlined part.
a) Ahmed goes to school by bus. → How does Ahmed go to school?
b) The lesson starts at 8 o’clock. → When does the lesson start?
c) Fatima won the competition. → Who won the competition?
d) I bought the book because I need it. → Why did you buy the book?
