Introduction
Knowing when to use the Present Perfect vs the Simple Past is essential for the Bac exam. Both tenses talk about the past, but they have different uses and signal words.
1. Simple Past
Formation : Subject + Verb-ed (regular) / 2nd column (irregular)
Ex: I worked / I went
Uses :
- Completed actions at a specific past time: I visited Algiers last year.
- Past habits: He always played football when he was young.
- Sequence of past events: She arrived, ate, and left.
Signal words : yesterday, last week/month/year, in 2010, ago, then, when
2. Present Perfect
Formation : Subject + have/has + past participle (3rd column)
Ex: I have worked / She has gone
Uses :
- Experience (no specific time): I have visited Tlemcen.
- Change over time: Your English has improved.
- Recent past with present relevance: She has finished her homework (so now she can go out).
- Unfinished actions continuing to now: They have lived here since 2018.
Signal words : ever, never, already, yet, just, since, for, so far, recently
3. Key Differences
| Simple Past | Present Perfect |
|---|---|
| Specific time (yesterday, in 2015) | No specific time |
| Finished time period | Unfinished time period (today, this week) |
| Focus on when something happened | Focus on the result or experience |
4. Common Mistakes
- ❌ I have seen him yesterday. → ✅ I saw him yesterday. (yesterday = specific past)
- ❌ He has lived in Oran since five years. → ✅ He has lived in Oran for five years. (for + duration; since + starting point)
- ❌ She didn’t finish yet. → ✅ She hasn’t finished yet. (yet → Present Perfect)
5. Bac-style Exercises
Exercise 1: Put the verbs in the correct tense.
1. I (never/be) to Annaba. → have never been
2. They (visit) the museum last Friday. → visited
3. She (already/finish) her project. → has already finished
4. We (not/see) him since Monday. → haven’t seen
Exercise 2: Choose the correct option.
1. I (have visited / visited) my grandmother last weekend. → visited
2. He (has worked / worked) as a teacher since 2015. → has worked
3. They (have gone / went) to the cinema two hours ago. → went
📌 Bac Tip : Look for the signal word first — it tells you which tense to use. ‘Ago’ and ‘last’ = Simple Past. ‘Since’, ‘for’, ‘ever’, ‘never’ = Present Perfect.
