Simplified Explanation

1. Forming Questions in Simple Past — To ask about past events, we use the auxiliary verb “Did” + subject + base form of the verb. Structure: Did + subject + base verb + …? Example: Affirmative: “You played football.” Question: “Did you play football?” Note: The main verb goes back to its base form (no -ed ending).

2. Forming Negative Sentences — To make a negative sentence in the Simple Past, use “did not” (didn’t) + base verb. Structure: Subject + did not (didn’t) + base verb + … Example: “I did not (didn’t) watch TV last night.” “She did not (didn’t) visit her grandmother yesterday.”

\n\n

3. Using Question Words (Wh- Questions) — When we need specific information, we use question words before “Did”: What did you do yesterday? Where did she go last weekend? When did they arrive? Why did he leave early? Who did you meet? How did you travel? Structure: Wh-word + did + subject + base verb?

4. Short Answers — Short answers use Yes/No + subject pronoun + did/didn’t. Examples: “Did you play tennis?” “Yes, I did.” / “No, I didn’t.” “Did they visit the museum?” “Yes, they did.” / “No, they didn’t.”
