Future Tense (Will and Going to) — English 4th Year Middle School

Introduction

In English, there are two common ways to talk about the future: using will and using going to. Although both can express future actions, they are used in different situations. This lesson will help you understand when to use each form.

Part 1: Using ‘Will’

Form: Subject + will + base verb
Examples: I will go, She will come, They will study

Uses of ‘Will’:

1. Spontaneous decisions (decisions made at the moment of speaking):
The phone is ringing. — I will answer it.

2. Predictions about the future (opinions):
I think it will rain tomorrow.

3. Promises and offers:
I will help you with your homework. (promise)
I will carry that bag for you. (offer)

Negative form: will not = won’t
She won’t come to the party.

Question form: Will + subject + base verb?
Will you come to school tomorrow?

Part 2: Using ‘Going to’

Form: Subject + am/is/are + going to + base verb
Examples: I am going to study, She is going to travel, They are going to play

Uses of ‘Going to’:

1. Planned actions (decisions made before speaking):
I am going to visit my grandmother next weekend. (I planned this)

2. Predictions based on evidence (something we can see):
Look at those clouds! It is going to rain. (we see dark clouds)

Negative form: subject + am/is/are + not + going to
I am not going to watch TV tonight.

Part 3: ‘Will’ vs ‘Going to’ — Summary

Will: spontaneous decisions, promises, offers, predictions (opinions).
Going to: planned actions, predictions with evidence.

1. I’m thirsty. I ______ (have) a glass of water.
