Bac English: Reading Comprehension – Tips, Strategies and Practice for the BAC Exam
Introduction
Reading comprehension is a core component of the Baccalaureate English exam in Algeria. You will be given a passage (usually 200–400 words) followed by a series of questions testing your understanding. This lesson provides a complete guide to tackling reading comprehension passages effectively, with strategies, question types, and a full practice text.
Learning Objectives
- Develop effective strategies for approaching reading passages
- Identify the main idea, supporting details, and the author’s purpose
- Master the different question types: multiple choice, true/false, short answer, vocabulary in context
- Practice with a BAC-style reading passage and model answers
Part 1: Before You Read – Previewing the Text
Spending 30 seconds previewing the text before reading in detail can dramatically improve your comprehension. Follow these steps:
1. Read the Title and Subheadings: The title tells you the topic. Subheadings reveal the structure of the text.
2. Look at the Questions First: Read the questions before reading the passage. This tells you what information to look for while reading.
3. Notice Key Words: Scan for dates, names, numbers, and repeated words — these are often answers to questions.
4. Identify the Text Type: Is it a newspaper article, an opinion piece, a scientific text, a narrative? Each type requires a different reading approach.
Part 2: While Reading – Active Reading Techniques
Skimming (القراءة السريعة): Read the first sentence of each paragraph to get the general idea. This helps you understand the main argument before diving into details.
Scanning (المسح): Look for specific information (dates, names, figures) that answer the questions. Move your eyes quickly over the text — don’t read every word.
Highlighting Key Information: If you can write on the exam paper, underline or circle key words, transition words (however, therefore, moreover), and the main idea of each paragraph.
Guessing Vocabulary from Context: When you encounter an unknown word, don’t panic! Read the surrounding sentences — the context often gives clues about the meaning. Example: “The arid desert receives less than 25cm of rain per year” — from “less than 25cm of rain” we can guess “arid” means “very dry.”
Part 3: Common Question Types and How to Answer Them
1. Main Idea Questions: “What is the main idea of the text?” / “What is the best title?” → Look at the first and last paragraphs. The main idea is often stated in the introduction or conclusion.
2. True/False or Statement Confirmation: “Are the following statements true or false? Justify.” → Find the exact part of the text that relates to each statement. Copy a short phrase as justification.
3. Vocabulary in Context: “Find in the text a word that means…” → Scan for synonyms. The word will be in the same paragraph or nearby.
4. Reference Questions: “What does ‘it’ in line 15 refer to?” → Look at the sentence before the pronoun. The referent is usually the noun immediately preceding.
5. Short Answer Questions: “According to the text, why did…” → Find the relevant section and answer in your own words, but use key words from the text.
Part 4: BAC Practice Passage – Climate Change
Read the following passage and answer the questions below:
“Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges facing humanity in the twenty-first century. Global temperatures have risen by approximately 1.1°C since pre-industrial times, primarily due to the increase in greenhouse gas emissions from human activities such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation. The consequences are already visible: melting polar ice caps, rising sea levels, and more frequent extreme weather events including heatwaves, floods, and wildfires. However, international efforts such as the Paris Agreement aim to limit global warming to well below 2°C. Scientists emphasize that urgent action is needed to transition to renewable energy sources and adopt sustainable practices.”
Questions:
1. What is the main cause of global warming according to the passage?
Answer: The increase in greenhouse gas emissions from human activities such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation.
2. Are the following statements true or false? Justify.
a) Global temperatures have risen by 2°C since pre-industrial times. → False. The text says temperatures have risen by approximately 1.1°C.
b) The Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming. → True. The text states: “the Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming to well below 2°C.”
3. Find in the text a word or phrase that means:
a) urgent problems (paragraph 1) → challenges
b) cutting down forests (paragraph 1) → deforestation
4. What does “they” in the phrase “renewable energy sources” refer to? → The text doesn’t use “they” but the idea refers to energy sources that can be renewed naturally, like solar and wind power.
Part 5: BAC Exam Tips for Reading Comprehension
- Time management: Spend no more than 20 minutes on the reading section (including reading and answering).
- Answer in complete sentences when asked to “justify” or “explain.”
- Use the exact words from the text when the question says “Find in the text…”
- For True/False questions, ALWAYS provide a justification — even if it’s not explicitly asked, it’s good practice.
- Don’t leave any question unanswered — make an educated guess if necessary.
- Practice with authentic texts from different genres: scientific articles, opinion pieces, narratives, and news reports.
Summary
Reading comprehension success comes from a combination of strategies: previewing the text, active reading techniques, understanding question types, and regular practice. By applying the techniques in this lesson and practicing with BAC-style passages, you can significantly improve your reading score. Remember: the answer is always in the text — your job is to find it!
