Bac English: Conditionals (If Clauses) – Types, Rules and Practice – 3rd Year Secondary School

Conditionals (If Clauses) – 3rd Year Secondary School (Bac) English

Conditional sentences are a key grammar topic in the Baccalaureate English exam. They appear in multiple-choice questions, rewriting exercises, and written expression tasks. Mastering conditionals is essential for achieving a high score in the grammar section.

Lesson Objectives:

  • Identify the three main types of conditional sentences
  • Understand the tense patterns used in each type
  • Differentiate between zero, first, second, and third conditionals
  • Practice with Bac-style exam exercises

1. Zero Conditional (General Truths):

Structure: If + Present Simple, … Present Simple
Use: For facts that are always true, scientific truths, and habits.
Example: If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.
Example: If it rains, the grass gets wet.

2. First Conditional (Real Future):

Structure: If + Present Simple, … will + base verb
Use: For possible situations in the present or future that are likely to happen.
Example: If you study hard, you will pass the Bac exam.
Example: If she arrives early, we will catch the bus.

3. Second Conditional (Unreal Present/Future):

Structure: If + Past Simple, … would + base verb
Use: For imaginary or unlikely situations in the present or future.
Example: If I had more time, I would travel around the world.
Note: We use ‘were’ for all subjects in the if-clause (If I were you, …).

4. Third Conditional (Unreal Past):

Structure: If + Past Perfect, … would have + past participle
Use: For imaginary situations in the past; things that did NOT happen.
Example: If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
Meaning: I didn’t study hard, so I failed. (regret about the past)

Bac-Style Exercise:

Rewrite the following sentences using the correct conditional:

  1. I don’t have a car. I can’t drive to school. (Second conditional)
Answer: If I had a car, I would drive to school.
  2. She didn’t practise enough. She didn’t win the competition. (Third conditional)
Answer: If she had practised enough, she would have won the competition.
  3. You work hard. You succeed. (First conditional)
Answer: If you work hard, you will succeed.
  4. Water freezes. It turns into ice. (Zero conditional)
Answer: If water freezes, it turns into ice.

Summary Table:

  • Zero: If + Present → Present (general truth)
  • First: If + Present → will + verb (real future)
  • Second: If + Past → would + verb (unreal present)
  • Third: If + Past Perfect → would have + P.P. (unreal past)

Conclusion:

Conditionals are an essential part of English grammar for the Bac exam. Focus on the tense patterns and the meaning (real vs unreal, present vs past). Practice by rewriting sentences using different conditional types.
