Gerunds and Infinitives: Rules and Usage

Understanding gerunds and infinitives is key for 2nd Year Secondary literary stream students (شعبة آداب).

1. Gerunds (Verb-ing)

Used as nouns. Swimming is fun. / I enjoy reading.

2. Infinitives (To + verb)

I want to learn. / She needs to study.

3. Verbs followed by Gerund

enjoy, avoid, consider, finish, imagine, mind, practice, stop, suggest

He stopped smoking.

4. Verbs followed by Infinitive

want, need, decide, hope, promise, plan, agree, learn, refuse

I hope to see you soon.

5. Verbs followed by both (with change in meaning)

stop	stop smoking (quit)	stop to smoke (pause)
