Expressing Opinion: Agreeing and Disagreeing
In writing and speaking, it is important to express opinions and respond to others’ opinions appropriately.
Expressing personal opinion
- In my opinion / From my point of view: “In my opinion, education is the key to success.”
- I think / I believe / I feel: “I think that technology has changed our lives.”
- As far as I am concerned: “As far as I am concerned, this is the best solution.”
- It seems to me that: “It seems to me that we should act now.”
Agreeing
- I totally agree: “I totally agree with your point.”
- Exactly / Absolutely / Definitely: “Absolutely! That is a great idea.”
- You are right: “You are right about that.”
- I share your view: “I share your view on this matter.”
Disagreeing politely
- I see your point, but: “I see your point, but I have a different opinion.”
- I am afraid I disagree: “I am afraid I disagree with that statement.”
- That may be true, but: “That may be true, but there is another side.”
- Respectfully, I think: “Respectfully, I think you are mistaken.”
Exercises
- Write a paragraph expressing your opinion on: “Social media is harmful to young people.”
- Respond showing agreement: “I believe that reading is essential for success.”
- Respond showing polite disagreement: “School uniforms should be abolished.”
