The Present Perfect Tense: Formation and Uses
The present perfect connects the past to the present. It is used for actions that started in the past and continue, or have a result in the present.
Formation
Have/Has + past participle
- I have visited Paris.
- She has finished her homework.
- They have never been to London.
Uses
- Life experience: “I have traveled to many countries.”
- Unfinished action: “She has lived here for 5 years.” (she still lives here)
- Past action with present result: “I have lost my keys.” (I still can’t find them)
- With ever/never: “Have you ever seen the ocean?”
- With just/already/yet: “He has just left.” “I have already eaten.”
Present Perfect vs Past Simple
- Present Perfect: no specific time. “I have visited London.” (sometime in my life)
- Past Simple: specific time. “I visited London in 2020.”
Exercises
- Complete: “She _____ (live) in Algiers since 2010.”
- Choose: “I _____ (have seen/saw) that film last week.”
- Make sentences using present perfect: “ever / eat / Algerian food?”
