Reported Speech: Statements and Questions
Reported speech (indirect speech) is used to report what someone said without quoting their exact words. It requires changes in pronouns, tenses, time expressions, and word order.
Reported Statements
When reporting statements, the tense shifts back: present -> past, present perfect -> past perfect, will -> would, can -> could. Pronouns change: I -> he/she, my -> his/her. Time expressions change: now -> then, today -> that day, yesterday -> the day before, tomorrow -> the next day.
Reported Questions
For yes/no questions: use if/whether + statement word order. Example: Do you like coffee? -> He asked if I liked coffee. For wh- questions: keep the wh- word + statement word order. Example: Where do you live? -> She asked where I lived.
