Conditional Sentences: Type 1, 2 and 3
Conditional sentences (if-clauses) express a condition and its result. There are three main types of conditionals, each expressing a different degree of possibility and time reference. Mastering conditionals is essential for the BAC exam.
Type 1: Real/Probable Condition (Future)
Type 1 expresses a real possibility in the future. Structure: If + present simple, will + base verb. Example: “If it rains tomorrow, I will stay at home.” The condition is probable and the result is in the future. You can also use: present continuous, modals (can, may, should), imperative in the result clause. Example: “If you study hard, you can pass the exam.”
Type 2: Unreal/Improbable Condition (Present)
Type 2 expresses an unreal or improbable situation in the present or future. Structure: If + past simple, would + base verb. Example: “If I had more money, I would travel around the world.” The condition is imaginary or unlikely. Note: use “were” for all subjects with “if I were you” (hypothetical). Example: “If I were you, I would accept the offer.”
Type 3: Unreal Condition (Past)
Type 3 expresses an impossible condition in the past — something that didn’t happen and cannot be changed. Structure: If + past perfect, would have + past participle. Example: “If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.” (But I didn’t study hard, and I failed). This type is used to express regret or criticism about past events.
Examples
- Type 1 (real): “If you eat too much, you will feel sick.”
- Type 2 (unreal present): “If I knew the answer, I would tell you.”
- Type 3 (unreal past): “If we had left earlier, we would have caught the train.”
- Special case: “Unless” = if not: “Unless you study, you will fail.”
Exercises
- Complete with the correct form: “If it … (rain) tomorrow, we … (cancel) the picnic.”
- Rewrite: “I didn’t know you were in town, so I didn’t call you.” (Use type 3)
- Write one sentence for each conditional type about environmental issues.
