Making Polite Requests: Can, Could, Would, May
Being able to make polite requests is an essential communication skill in English. Different structures express different levels of formality and politeness depending on the context and the person you are addressing.
Can and Could
“Can” is informal and direct: “Can you help me?” “Can I use your pen?” “Could” is more polite and formal: “Could you open the window, please?” “Could I borrow your book for a moment?” “Could” is also used in hypothetical situations: “Could you tell me the time if you have a moment?” Adding “please” at the beginning or end of the request increases politeness.
Would and May
“Would you mind + verb-ing” is very polite: “Would you mind closing the door?” “Would you mind if I sat here?” “May” is formal and used for permission: “May I come in?” “May I ask a question?” “May I use your phone?” “Would you like to…” is used for offers and invitations: “Would you like some tea?” “Would you like to join us for dinner?”
Polite Formulas
Useful polite expressions: “I wonder if you could…” “Do you think you could…” “Would it be possible to…” “If it’s not too much trouble…” “I was wondering if you could possibly…” These formulas are especially appropriate in formal and academic contexts, such as writing to a professor or an employer.
Examples
- Informal (friend): “Can you pass me the salt, please?”
- Polite (teacher): “Could you please explain this exercise again?”
- Very polite (stranger): “Would you mind helping me with this bag?”
- Formal (official): “May I have a moment of your time, sir?”
Exercises
- Rewrite these requests more politely: “Give me the book.” “Tell me the answer.”
- Complete: “… you mind waiting a moment?” “Would you like … (join) us?”
- Write a polite email asking your teacher for an extension on an assignment deadline.
