The Present Simple Tense

The Present Simple is one of the most important tenses in English. It is used for habits, facts, routines, and general truths.

Uses

• Habits and routines: I wake up at 7 am every day.
• General truths and facts: The sun rises in the east.
• Permanent situations: She lives in London.
• Timeless statements: Water boils at 100°C.
• Scheduled events (future): The train leaves at 9 pm.
• With adverbs of frequency: always, usually, sometimes, never (I always drink coffee).

Form

Affirmative: I/You/We/They + base verb. He/She/It + verb + s/es. (He works, She goes, It watches).

Negative: do/does + not + base verb. (I don’t like, She doesn’t eat).

Questions: Do/Does + subject + base verb? (Do you like? Does he work?).

Exercises

1. Fill: (She … (go) to school – They … (not/play) football – … he … (like) coffee?).
2. Correct: (He go to school – She don’t like tea – Does they work?).
3. Write 5 sentences about your daily routine using Present Simple.
