Making Requests and Offers: Can, Could, Would

Different modals are used to make requests and offers with different levels of politeness.

Making Requests

• Can you…? (informal): ‘Can you help me?’
• Could you…? (polite): ‘Could you open the door, please?’
• Would you mind + gerund? (very polite): ‘Would you mind closing the window?’

Making Offers

• Can I…? ‘Can I help you?’
• Shall I…? ‘Shall I carry your bag?’
• Would you like…? ‘Would you like some tea?’

Exercises

1. Make a polite request: ‘I want you to help me.’
2. Make an offer: ‘I can carry that for you.’
3. What is the difference between ‘Can you’ and ‘Could you’?
