Expressing Purpose: To, In order to, So that

Purpose expressions show the reason why an action is done.

To + Infinitive

‘I study to get good grades.’ (simple purpose).

In order to / So as to + Infinitive

Formal: ‘She left early in order to catch the train.’

So that + Clause

‘He spoke loudly so that everyone could hear.’ (with can/could, will/would).

Exercises

1. Combine: ‘He works hard. He wants to support his family.’
2. Rewrite using ‘so that’: ‘I left early to catch the bus.’
3. Complete: ‘She studies hard ___ she can get a scholarship.’
