Expressing Cause and Effect

Cause and effect connectors show the reason for something and its result.

Cause Connectors

Because, since, as, because of, due to, owing to.

‘He passed because he studied hard.’

Effect Connectors

Therefore, consequently, as a result, thus, so, for this reason.

‘He studied hard. Therefore, he passed.’

Exercises

1. Combine: ‘It rained. The match was cancelled.’ (cause/effect).
2. Rewrite using ‘because of’: ‘He succeeded because he worked hard.’
3. Complete: ‘The roads were flooded, ___ we stayed home.’
