Expressing Purpose and Result

Expressing purpose and result helps make your writing more precise and logical.

Expressing Purpose

• To + infinitive: “I study to pass the exam.”
• In order to / so as to: “She left early in order to catch the bus.”
• For + noun/gerund: “This machine is for testing water quality.”
• So that + clause: “He spoke loudly so that everyone could hear.”

Expressing Result

• So + adjective/adverb + that: “He was so tired that he fell asleep.”
• Such + noun phrase + that: “It was such a good film that I watched it twice.”
• Therefore, as a result, consequently: formal result.

Exercises

1. Combine: “He works hard. He wants to succeed.” (purpose).
2. Combine: “The book was interesting. I read it twice.” (result).
3. Rewrite using “so that”: “She studies to get good grades.”
