Word Formation: Prefixes and Suffixes

Word formation helps expand vocabulary by creating new words from existing roots using prefixes and suffixes.

Common Prefixes

• Un-, in-, im-, il-, ir-, dis-: negative (unhappy, impossible).
• Re-: again (rewrite, rebuild).
• Pre-: before (preview, prewar).
• Mis-: wrong (misunderstand, mislead).
• Over-: too much (overcook, oversleep).

Common Suffixes

• -tion, -sion: noun (education, decision).
• -ment: noun (development, enjoyment).
• -ity: noun (activity, possibility).
• -ness: noun (happiness, kindness).
• -ful: adjective (beautiful, helpful).
• -less: adjective (careless, homeless).
• -ly: adverb (quickly, carefully).
