Conditional Sentences: Type 1, 2, 3
Conditional sentences express that one action depends on another. There are three main types.
Type 1: Real Present/Future
If + present simple, will + infinitive. Expresses real possibility.
“If you study, you will pass.”
Type 2: Unreal Present
If + past simple, would + infinitive. Expresses hypothetical or unlikely situations.
“If I had money, I would travel.”
Type 3: Unreal Past
If + past perfect, would have + past participle. Expresses regret about the past.
“If I had studied, I would have passed.”
Zero Conditional
If + present simple, present simple. Expresses general truths.
“If you heat ice, it melts.”
Exercises
- Identify the type: “If I were you, I would go.”
- Complete: “If it rains, we ___ (stay) home.”
- Write a Type 3 conditional about a past regret.
