Passive Voice: Formation and Usage – BAC Literary Stream
The passive voice is an essential grammatical structure in English. It is frequently tested in the BAC exam. Understanding when and how to use it is crucial for both writing and reading comprehension.
1. What is the Passive Voice?
The passive voice is used when the focus is on the action or the receiver of the action, not the doer. The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence.
Structure: Subject + be (conjugated) + past participle + (by agent)
Example: Active: The student wrote the essay. → Passive: The essay was written by the student.
2. Formation in Different Tenses
| Tense | Active | Passive |
|---|---|---|
| Present Simple | writes | is/are written |
| Present Continuous | is writing | is being written |
| Present Perfect | has written | has been written |
| Past Simple | wrote | was/were written |
| Past Continuous | was writing | was being written |
| Past Perfect | had written | had been written |
| Future Simple | will write | will be written |
| Modal Verbs | must write | must be written |
3. When to Use the Passive Voice
- When the doer is unknown: “My car was stolen last night.”
- When the doer is obvious: “The criminal has been arrested.”
- When the action is more important than the doer: “The bridge was built in 1990.”
- In formal and scientific writing: “The experiment was conducted three times.”
4. Special Cases
Verbs with two objects (direct and indirect): “She gave me a book.” → “I was given a book” OR “A book was given to me.”
Impersonal passive (It is said that…): “People say that he is rich.” → “It is said that he is rich.” OR “He is said to be rich.”
