Countable and Uncountable Nouns: Much, Many, A lot of

Understanding the difference between countable and uncountable nouns is essential for correct grammar in the BAC exam.

Countable nouns:

Nouns that can be counted. They have singular and plural forms. Examples: book/books, student/students, country/countries, child/children. Use “a/an” for singular: “a book”, “an apple”. Use “many” and “few” for plurals: “many students”, “few countries”.

Uncountable nouns:

Nouns that cannot be counted as separate items. They have no plural form. Examples: water, rice, information, advice, homework, music, money, news, furniture. Use “much” and “little”: “much water”, “little time”. Use “some/any” for indefinite quantities: “some water”, “any information”.

Quantifiers:

• Much/Many: “Much” for uncountables (much time), “many” for countables (many books). Used mainly in negatives and questions.
• A lot of / Lots of: Used for both countable and uncountable in affirmative sentences. “A lot of people”, “a lot of money”.
• Some/Any: “Some” in affirmatives and offers (Would you like some tea?), “any” in negatives and questions (Is there any milk?).
• Few/A few: “Few” (negative – not enough): “Few people came.” “A few” (positive – some): “A few people came.”
• Little/A little: “Little” (negative – not enough): “Little time remains.” “A little” (positive – some): “A little sugar is enough.”

BAC Example 2022:

“Correct the mistakes: ‘There is many informations about the exam.’ → ‘There is a lot of information about the exam.'”
