Articles: Definite and Indefinite Articles with Rules
English has three articles: a, an, the. A/an are indefinite articles used with singular countable nouns. ‘A’ is used before consonant sounds (a book, a university). ‘An’ is used before vowel sounds (an apple, an hour, an honest person). ‘The’ is the definite article used for specific nouns (the book on the table, the sun, the moon). Zero article is used with general plurals (Books are useful) and uncountable nouns (Water is essential). Rules for using ‘the’: unique things, superlatives, ordinal numbers, musical instruments.
